- What is the Valley Promise?
The Valley Promise is a last-dollar scholarship initiative to help students get an affordable and quality college education. The program will connect you, the student, with dedicated support staff who will help you navigate and succeed in college.
- What are the eligibility requirements to be a Valley Promise Scholar?
To qualify, graduating students from participating high schools must:
- Be U.S. and Texas residents.
- Be In-district resident of Hidalgo or Starr Counties.
- Complete Apply Texas Application.
- Complete a FAFSA or TASFA application.
- Have financial need based on U.S. Department of Education determination.
- Must enroll for at least 12 hours.
- Maintain a 2.0 Grade Point Average.
- Meet all program requirements by July 1, 2025.
- When can I make my Valley Promise pledge?
The Valley Promise is for Hidalgo and Starr County seniors graduating from a participating high school. Class of 2025 seniors can begin taking the pledge October 1.
- What are the benefits of the Valley Promise?
The Valley Promise Scholarship covers the full cost of tuition that is not covered by other grants, scholarships, exemptions and benefits received by the student. It’s especially beneficial to dual credit students who have a head start on obtaining a degree.
- What does "last-dollar" funding mean?
The Valley Promise scholarship covers the tuition or the cost of classes after all grants and scholarships are applied. Valley Promise funding does not include the cost of textbooks or other learning materials.
- How is the Valley Promise initiative being funded?
The Valley Promise is both privately and publicly funded. South Texas College has had generous support from The Greater Texas Foundation, Communities Foundation of Texas and the Economic Mobility System. South Texas College and the STC Foundation will work to supplement the initiative through generous donors and supporters from throughout South Texas who share in the vision of affordable college for all.
- What type of courses can students enroll in as Valley Promise Scholars?
Valley Promise Scholars can enroll in either college credit courses towards an associate degree in one of 122 academic programs or sign up for certificate or associate degrees in one of dozens of short-term workforce training programs.
- How do I apply?
First complete your Apply Texas Application, then complete the Valley Promise Pledge by June 1, 2025. Also submit a financial aid application (FAFSA or TASFA).
